The Ultimate Cyclocross Barriers Skills Tutorial
The barriers are probably the most quintessential cyclocross thing in cyclocross. They’re most likely the thing that stood out the most when you saw a race for the first time. They’re also a major barrier (pun definitely intended) for first-timers because it involves the horror of dismounting, jumping, and remounting the bike at speed.
There are a ton of cyclocross skills and barrier technique videos out there but all of them leave an assumed element or two out forcing you to find another to answer your questions. I created this video to be the definitive tutorial, breaking down each movement, from beginning to end, without leaving anything out.*
Cyclocross Dismounts
From the approach to both feet on the ground, we break down the process to quickly and safely dismount your bike before the barriers or any obstacle you may encounter while racing cyclocross.
Cyclocross Remounts
Getting off the bike is one thing but probably the most daunting is getting back on without losing speed. The cyclocross remount looks incredibly smooth and easy when watching someone who’s done it countless times, but when trying it yourself it turns into a nightmare.
HUGE thank you to George “G” Schultz for running the barriers 100+ times and still agreeing to shoot again after I told him I screwed up his audio 🎙
MASSIVE thanks to Van Dessel Cycles for their support of #TheCXOff since day one.
DISCLAIMER: IF YOU LEARNED THIS DIFFERENTLY, CHECK YOUR TRIGGER AT THE DOOR. I’M NOT DECLARING YOUR WAY IS INCORRECT.
*[Ed. note: I left “crow-hop/stutter-step” out, but that long leading step covers that. Also forgot step-throughs. Basically, anything that involves a hyphen I forgot.]
